Mother Tongue Education

Many Ugandan children go to school, but still don’t know how to read or write. The reason for that is that most schools in Uganda teach in the official language English, and that is a language the children don’t know. So they receive teaching in a foreign language … and fail tests.
LABE is a Ugandan NGO that advocates education in the mother tongue. Children who live in the Acholi speaking part of the country should receive their education in Acholi. Children who live in other parts of Uganda should be taught in their mother tongue. After a few years of going to school, when the children know how to read and write in their first language, teaching can shift to Engluish, the official language in Uganda.
Many parents still need to be convinced of the importance of education in the mother tongue during the first few years in school.

Oxfam Novib Trailwalker
